Deposit Description
EAST LAGOON, mine developed in 1967 on copper mineralisation concealed 5-10 m below the bed of Pernatty Lagoon. Copper sulphides were stratabound at the disconformable contact between red silicified sandstones of the Sturtian Pandurra Formation, and overlying Whyalla Sandstone of Marinoan age, forming a zone 2-3 m thick. Djurleite was the predominant copper mineral, accompanied by lesser amounts of digenite and chalcocite in a complexly zoned deposit. The best grades of ore were found in porous sections of the basal Whyalla Sandstone, where mineralisation occurred in irregular patches as an inter-granular matrix. Subordinate mineralisation in the underlying Pandurra Formation was confined to a well developed joint system, where it formed a coating on joint surfaces. East Lagoon produced 212,350 tonnes @ 0.79% copper and 10 g/t silver, containing 1,667 tonnes of copper metal and about 2,000 kg of silver.
