Deposit Description
GUN, abandoned open cut of >1.6Ha x 1-6m deep developed on a deposit of copper ore of atacamite, with subsidiary bornite and possibly chalcocite occuring in host Whyalla Sandstone overlying an irregular, eroded surface of the Brighton Limestone Member. Also associated with prominent manganese oxide. Ore was concentrated in high-grade pockets within gutters or channels on the eroded palaeo-surface. Mineralisation is possibly associated with a palaeo-permafrost horizon similar to that at the Cattlegrid Breccia at the Marinoan disconformity. No individual pit production record, with figures amalgamated with Mount Gunson operations.
Originally worked in 1898 to recover a small amount of high-grade copper ore comprising a mixture of oxide and remnant sulphide minerals. The ore was hand picked from shallow underground workings, mainly prior to 1920 for recorded production of 75 tonne @ 15.6% Cu.
