Deposit Description
KAPINNIE, shaft sunk for water in early 1940s penetrated kaolin from 6-13m. There was cover of ~1m of calcrete (see pp 88, MR 78). Analysis identified Na and K suggesting kaolin contains minor residual feldspathic material and mica. Composition corresponds to China clay of good quality. May warrant further investigation, potential for large deposit (geologist comment, 1943). Probable deeply weathered Warrow Quartzite.
Exploration by Endeavour Oil Co. NL in the early 1970s identified more widespread kaolin occurrences to the north, south, and west of Kapinnie over an area of >20km2. They sampled kaolin from spoils from water bores ~1.7km to the north of the Kappinnie railway station, and 4.2 km to the west from the first sample. Kaolin also noted in hole KAPI 15. Testwork on the first sample from Section 5 Hundred Mitchell (Mitchell 8B) returned values with reflectivity 88.5% at both -20 microns, and -2 microns. The kaolin origin was thought to be residual in nature, derived from deep weathering of basement rock.
