Deposit Description
PRICE, salt produced by solar evaporation of seawater from shallow tidal flats behind a dune sand barrier. Operations commenced in 1919, with evaporation and crystallising ponds established, with supply of seawater from Wills Creek. Natural salinity of the seawater sourced from the upper St. Vincent Gulf is above average. The current operation run by Cheetham Salt Ltd, comprised an area of 1064Ha of evaporators and crystallisers and a processing plant, which produced bagged and packaged salt for industrial and household use. Bulk salt was sent to Cheethams Geelong refinery (Victoria), or was shipped to overseas markets in New Zealand and South East Asia from BHPs loading facilities at Ardrossan. Production from 1974-2013 was estimated at 4.8 million tonne. Recent annual production is ~50-100,000tpa.
