Deposit Summary
quartz-iron oxide vein with copper in host metasediment of the Saddleworth Formation. Considerable prospecting took place. It was reworked in 1935 for gold with production recorded of 85.8t ore yielding 238.7gm of gold at 2.8g/t.
Deposit Description
ELAIA, workings on Section 206, Hundred Yongala, initial discovery of copper carbonate-bearing ferruginous quartz veins, with workings of a prospecting nature developed in 1915 as the Lewis Mine on 2 narrow quartz-iron oxide veins carrying copper carbonate in host slate of the Saddleworth Formation. One 3cm wide vein trended EW, dips near vertical, the second 10cm wide vein trended NS, dips to the E. Prospecting included shallow open cuts, pits, trenches and an underlie shaft to ~10m depth. On the neighbouring paddock (Blundsen's) a shallow pit disclosed similar style mineralisation on a NS-trending quartz vein. A sample assayed 16.8% Cu.
In 1935 on section 206 a single shaft was developed (Elaia Mine) on a similar lode while prospecting for gold. Production recorded from 2 parcels of ore in 1935 was 11.32 tonne for 38.424 gm at 3.4 g/tAu. Overall production as recorded on unpublished Mine Summary Card # 64 for Orroroo 250K map sheet was 85.8 tonne of ore yielding 238.7gm of gold at 2.8g/t.
