Deposit Description
PETERS HILL, mine developed in 1848 on a concordant silver-lead-copper mineralised quartz vein in host phyllite of the Mintaro Shale. Relatively small lenses of quartz carry gold, silver-lead, copper and zinc minerals. From 1848-51 more than 152 tonne of galena ore was produced, as well as a few tonne of copper ore, no grades determined. Also recorded production of 100 kg of copper ore grading 15%Cu in 1894, reworked in 1907, and again in 1963 by K.F. Fernandez for production of some galena ore from costeans and open cuts. Also minor activity in the late 1970s. Workings were originally spread out over a much larger area. main workings are consined to Section 99, Hundred Gilbert. They include 4 shafts ~90m apart reportedly connected by a drive. Mapping in the district has identified that other lodes occur at the same stratigraphic level.
