Deposit Description
MOUNT JAGGED, irregular-shaped secondary hematite-ilmenite body in host felspathic schist of the Barossa Complex. It is historically significant in that it records the first production of pig iron in the State in 1873. Total quantity mined was very small, estimated at 1-2000 tonne. Ore was treated on site via a charcoal-fired smelter for a cast iron product costing two pounds 10 shillings per ton to produce. Mineralogy was dominantly hematite, minor ilmenite, trace quartz. Samples assayed >65%Fe, with 4-5% TiO2. Workings included a main open cut to 5m depth, and 4 shafts. Estimated remaining resource was 5,080 tonne. Some ore was sent to Victor Harbor for use as flux. Radioactive material was identified from dumps in 1954. Investigation by the Geological Survey confirmed an origin of radioactivity was not from uranium minerals, with a probable source from thorium minerals.
