Deposit Description
PORT PIRIE SMELTING WORKS built in 1889, becoming the world's biggest lead smelter by 1934. Primary source of ore was from the Broken Hill Pb-Zn mines. Current operators Nyrstar, who operate the joint lead and zinc smelter facility producing lead, zinc, and copper metals, silver, gold and sulphuric acid. It remains the largest lead smelter in the world with the blast furnace rated at 245,000 tpa, with a capacity to expand to 270,000 tpa. It processes concentrates from other mines such as Rosebery, Tasmania, Century in Queensland, as well as recycled lead batteries, and residues from other metallurgical plants.
