Deposit Summary
mine developed on a pegmatite for white albite and beryl.
Deposit Description
ALCONIE HILL workings developed on pegmatites on the slopes of Alconie Hill about 11 km northwest of Bimbowie Homestead. Tenure first pegged in 1933, though there was no production of consequence. From 1961-69 there was production of white albite and beryl for recorded production 650 tonne feldspar from a pegmatite on the SW spur of the hill. Mapping identified chiastolite with well formed internal structure littering the lower western slopes. Host was an E-dipping sequence of schist, with the chiastolite in more carbonaceous bands. Twinned chiastolite crystals have been partly to completely replaced by fibrolite and sericite. Dark porphyroblasts of andalusite were identified in host schist at the hill top. In 1956 a bulk sample was collected for testing to produce a marketable graphite. Mapping had identified graphitic schist with up to 30% by volume graphite over wide intervals. 2 samples of detrital chiastolite assayed 37.7% and 40.55 Al2O3.
